Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are specially designed to act as artificial tooth roots to stabilize your dentures. Dental implants stay securely in place because they’re fused to your jawbone. They’re typically made from titanium.

In an in-office procedure, Dr. Dharia surgically fuses the implants to your jawbone to produce a sturdy base for your replacement teeth. Your dentures are comfortably placed on top of your implants.

Dental implants come in different shapes and sizes and can be used to replace a few missing teeth or an entire set of teeth.

Dr. Dharia might suggest dental implants for a number of reasons, such as if you have missing teeth, if you want to improve your speech, or if your regular dentures keep falling out.

How are dental implants placed?

The procedure to place dental implants is straightforward. Dr. Dharia administers anesthesia prior to making an incision in your gums. Dr. Dharia drills small holes in your jawbone before placing titanium implants in the holes and stitching your gums closed.

The next step is a process called osseointegration where your new implants fuse with your jaw over time. After your dental implant is surgically placed it typically takes about three to six months for the successful fusion of your implants and jawbone.

Once the healing stage is complete, you return to the office where Dr. Dharia secures a supporting element (abutment) to the top of each implant. For the last step, Dr. Dharia attaches your dental prosthesis to the abutments.

How do I know if I’m eligible for dental implants?

You’re eligible for dental implants if you:

  • Have healthy oral tissues
  • Have a fully grown jawbone
  • Haven’t had any luck with your regular dentures
  • Don’t have any health problems that affect how your bones heal

Millions of people experience tooth loss for various reasons, including:

  • Injury to the teeth
  • Periodontal disease
  • Age-related tooth decay

Missing teeth can lead to bone loss that can change the shape of your face over time.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer a wide range of benefits, such as:

  • Securing and stabilizing your dentures
  • Enabling you to eat a normal healthy balanced diet
  • Improving the aesthetics of your smile
  • Boosting your dental health
  • Improving speech
  • Preserving your jawbone
  • Preventing future bone loss

Dental implants replicate your natural tooth roots, but the high-quality materials don’t decay and deteriorate like your natural teeth. Dental implants allow you to enjoy a beautiful smile and long-lasting results.
